Why Fred

A tutor for them. Real insight for you.

Most homework tools just give answers. Fred guides your child the way a good tutor would, and keeps you in the loop without spying on every keystroke.

For your child

Patient. Always.

Fred meets your child where they are. Never rushes them, never makes them feel daft for asking again.

  • Guides, doesn’t spoon-feed. Fred uses hints and questions, he won’t just hand over the answer.
  • Adapts to their level. KS2 reading age or GCSE depth. Fred matches the pitch automatically.
  • Available the night before. 8pm panic? Fred is awake. No booking, no waiting.
  • Encouraging, never sarcastic. Built so confidence goes up, not down.
For you

You stay in the loop.

A parent dashboard that tells you what’s actually going on, without you having to read every conversation.

  • Plain-English summaries. “Confident on fractions, struggling with negatives.” Not raw scores.
  • Effort, not just output. See whether they engaged or just clicked through.
  • Up to three children during the pilot. One family account, separate logins, one dashboard.
  • You set the rules. Subjects, year groups, ability levels. All under your control.

Safeguarding

Keeping children safe

Fred works with children, so safety comes first. Here's what we do to keep your child safe.

What Fred will and won't do

Fred is an AI tutor, not a friend or a counsellor, and it stays in its lane. Fred will never claim to be a real person, encourage your child to keep secrets from you, or set itself up as emotional support. If a child shares something worrying, Fred won't try to handle it alone. It responds with care and points them towards a trusted adult.

Spotting when a child is struggling

The platform has an automated layer that reads children's messages for signs of distress or a possible safeguarding concern. It's built specifically for a children's platform, sitting on top of the safety controls already built into the AI itself. If something is flagged, Fred responds gently and points the child towards someone who can help. Serious signals trigger an alert to the parent and, where appropriate, a designated safeguarding lead. It flags and signposts. It doesn't replace a real person.

No secret conversations

Parents can see their child's session activity on the parent dashboard, and Fred tells children this openly. There are no hidden chats.

Your child's data

Learn with Fred is built for children in the UK aged 7 to 16. We never share the content of a child's conversations with anyone for advertising. Fred's responses are generated using AI under a data processing agreement, and your child's conversations aren't used to train AI models. You can read the full detail in our privacy policy.

Where we are in the pilot

Learn with Fred launched in April 2026 with around 100 families. We have safeguarding controls in place and we test them regularly to make sure they're working as they should. We're also liaising with AI child specialists, tutors, teachers, safeguarding officers and child psychologists to continuously improve our safeguarding practices.

Talk to us

If you ever have a safeguarding concern, or a question about how your child is using Fred, email us at meow@learnwithfred.co.uk and we'll get back to you.

Held to recognised standards

Learn with Fred is built to the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code (the Children's Code), the UK standard for online services used by children. We've assessed ourselves against the Department for Education's product safety standards for generative AI, and we're putting in place the safeguarding measures the DfE sets out for tuition providers. We're also tracking the updated Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance due in September 2026. These standards are the bar we hold ourselves to, and we keep reviewing our practices as the guidance develops.

Who's behind it

Built by a parent, with people who know what they're doing

I've spent over twenty years building software, and I've spent the last few years watching my own two children navigate homework, revision and the night-before-a-test panic. I felt they needed something more: patient, available, and built around how they actually learn.

Learn with Fred has been designed and tested with the help of teachers, tutors, child psychologists and academics. Several are using the platform with their own students right now. There are no investors pushing growth at any cost, no advertising model, and absolutely no interest in your child's data beyond helping them learn.

FAQ

Common questions

Everything you need to know before joining the pilot.

How does the pilot work?+

After you join, we email you an invite code in FRED-XXXX format. You use that code to register your family account on the app. The pilot is completely free. In return, we ask for honest feedback to help us improve before launch.

Will Fred just give my child the answers?+

No, and this is built into how Fred works. Fred is designed to guide children to answers through questions and hints, not to do their work for them. He’ll explain concepts, break problems into steps, and celebrate progress, but he won’t write their essay or solve their maths for them.

What year groups does Learn with Fred cover?+

Currently KS2, KS3 and KS4 (roughly ages 7–16) across Maths, English, Science, History and Geography. We plan to add more subjects in due course. If there’s a subject your child needs that isn’t covered yet, let us know and we’ll prioritise it.

Is my child’s data safe?+

Yes. We don’t sell data, show ads, or share information with third parties. Parents have full visibility of their child’s activity and can delete the account at any time. You can read more about how we keep children safe, including our safeguarding controls and how we handle your child’s data.

What happens after the pilot?+

After the pilot we plan to launch a paid subscription. Pilot families will be offered an early-adopter rate and will always be notified before any charges begin. Nothing changes without your agreement.

How many children can I add?+

Up to three children per family account during the pilot. Each child gets their own login and progress tracking. The parent dashboard shows all children in one place.

Should this replace my child’s human tutor?+

No, we’re firm believers a tool will never fully replace a great human tutor. But private tutoring can be expensive and not every family can afford it. Fred is designed to be the next best thing: available any time, endlessly patient, and personalised. If you already have a tutor, Fred works brilliantly alongside them. If you don’t, Fred is here.

What if I can’t afford it?+

Every child deserves access to good tutoring, regardless of family circumstances. If cost is ever a barrier, please get in touch, we’ll find a way to make it work. This isn’t small print: it’s a founding principle of Learn with Fred.

Who is Fred?+

Fred is a real tabby cat who lives with the founder in the UK. He’s also the unofficial mascot of the school at the end of the road, and his favourite spot is the couch in the SEND department, where he provides a calming influence to children who need it. He doesn’t do the actual tutoring (he’s a cat), but he supervises proceedings from his office chair.
