A real homework session, from the home screen, shortened. The child asks to start question 1, find 15% of 80.
  1. Child: I’m ready – let’s start question 1
  2. Fred: Great, let’s go! Question 1: Find 15% of 80. A useful trick for percentages without a calculator: start by finding 10%. What is 10% of 80?
  3. Child: 8
  4. Fred: Exactly right. 10% of 80 is 8. Now, 15% is 10% + 5%. You’ve got 10% already. How would you find 5% of 80?
  5. Child: half of 8 as 8 was 10%
  6. Fred: Spot on – that’s exactly the right thinking. 5% is half of 10%, so half of 8 is 4. What do you get when you add them together?
  7. Child: 12
  8. Fred: I make it 12 too – that’s correct! 15% of 80 = 12. And you worked it out in a really efficient way, breaking it into 10% + 5%.
Then a second session: Sam, in Year 10, asks Fred a Physics question.
  1. Child: why does a skydiver stop speeding up even though gravity is still pulling them down
  2. Fred: When a skydiver falls, two forces are acting on them: gravity pulling them down, and air resistance pushing up against them. At the start, gravity is stronger, so they accelerate. Here’s the key: as they go faster, the air resistance increases too. So what do you think happens when air resistance grows large enough to equal the force pulling them down?
  3. Child: the forces are balanced so they stop moving
  4. Fred: You’re on the right track with “forces are balanced” – that part is exactly right. But think carefully about what balanced forces actually mean for motion. Balanced forces don’t stop movement – they stop changing movement. The skydiver is already falling at speed when the forces balance. So what do you think happens to their speed at that point?
  5. Child: so the resultant force is zero and they keep falling at the same speed. is that terminal velocity?
  6. Fred: Yes, exactly right – that’s precisely what terminal velocity is. They fall at a constant speed. Good reasoning there – you caught your own mistake and corrected it yourself. Want to check you can apply this? What would happen to a skydiver’s terminal velocity if they spread their arms and legs out wide?
  7. Child: more surface area so more air resistance, so the forces balance at a lower speed. so their terminal velocity goes down?
  8. Fred: Yes, that’s exactly right. More surface area means more air resistance at any given speed, so the forces balance sooner. Terminal velocity decreases. That’s a complete, well-reasoned answer – you linked surface area to air resistance, and air resistance to where the forces balance.

Safeguarding

Keeping children safe

Fred works with children, so safety comes first. Here’s exactly what that means.

What happens if my child…

Fred never does the work for them

No essays written, no sums solved, no answers handed over. Fred asks questions and gives hints, so the thinking is your child’s own.

A tutor, never a friend or counsellor

Fred is a tutor, not a friend or a counsellor. It will never claim to be a real person, ask your child to keep secrets, or set itself up as emotional support. If a child shares something worrying, Fred responds with care and points them to a trusted adult.

Serious concerns come to you

An automated layer built for children checks for signs of distress, on top of the safety controls in the AI itself. Fred responds gently and points the child to someone who can help. Serious signals go to our safeguarding lead, one of the founders, who reviews them and lets you know. It flags and signposts. It never replaces a real person.

No secret conversations

Parents can see their child's session activity on the parent dashboard, and Fred tells children this openly. There are no hidden chats.

Never used for ads or AI training

Built for UK children aged 7 to 16. Your child's conversations are never shared for advertising and never used to train AI models. Full detail in our privacy policy.

A real person replies

Any safeguarding concern, or any question about how your child uses Fred: email hello@learnwithfred.co.uk and a person will reply.

Held to recognised standards

Designed to the ICO's Children's Code, the UK standard for online services used by children, and to the Department for Education's product safety expectations for generative AI. We use Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2026) as our guide for handling concerns. We are completing a formal self-assessment against these and will publish it here.

Built and tested with 77 pilot families between April and September 2026 before opening to everyone. Our safeguarding approach has had an outside safeguarding review and advice from a child psychologist, and we keep improving it.

How it works

One evening with Fred

Charlotte has a maths test on Friday. Here’s one evening of getting ready with Fred, and what you see afterwards.

  1. 7:30pm

    Getting ready for Friday’s test

Two-step equations are on Friday’s maths test. Charlotte picks the topics and how she wants to be tested.

  2. 7:36pm

    One question at a time

Quick questions with an explanation after every answer, then two in her own words that Fred marks like a real test.

  3. 7:48pm

    The gaps, found before Friday

4 of 6 quick questions and 3 of 5 written marks: a solid base, with two gaps to close before Friday.

  4. 7:52pm

    Talk it through with Fred

One tap opens a chat with Fred, already loaded with the questions she missed. He takes them one at a time, and she does the working.

  5. 8:15pm

    You see how it went

The quiz is on your dashboard, with Fred’s note in plain English, on the laptop or your phone, without you having to ask.

Who's behind it

Built by a parent, with teachers and tutors

Learn with Fred is built by a small UK team: a founder with twenty years in software and two school-age children, working with teachers, tutors and academics, with advice from a child psychologist. Several of them use the platform with their own students.

It started with the night-before-a-test panic every parent knows, and the feeling that children needed something more patient, more available and built around how they actually learn. There is no advertising model and no interest in your child's data beyond helping them learn.

And yes, there is a real Fred. The tabby who gave us the name supervises the office and has become a bit of a local celebrity, with a following of his own. Say hello to Fred on Facebook

FAQ

Common questions

Everything you need to know before you start.

How do I get started?+

Create a parent account at app.learnwithfred.co.uk, add a card (that's how we check a genuine adult is in charge; nothing is taken), then add your child. Their 14-day free trial starts the moment you do, with full access to everything. After that it's £15 a month for one child or £25 for two or more children, and you can cancel any time.

Will Fred just give my child the answers?+

No, and this is built into how Fred works. Fred is designed to guide children to answers through questions and hints, not to do their work for them. He’ll explain concepts, break problems into steps, and celebrate progress, but he won’t write their essay or solve their maths for them.

Can Fred help with essay questions?+

Yes. When your child brings an essay or exam-style question to Homework (“how far do you agree”, “evaluate”, “explain why”), Fred first explains what the question is really asking and roughly how much to write for the marks. Then he helps them build a plan in their own words before they write a sentence, and coaches one paragraph at a time. The question, their plan and their answer so far stay pinned at the top of the chat, so nothing gets lost. He asks for evidence from their own notes rather than handing over facts to copy, gives comments rather than a mark, and never writes the essay for them. In Write, “Help with a question from school” takes them straight there.

What year groups does Learn with Fred cover?+

Children aged 7 to 16 (Year 3 to Year 11) across Maths, English, Science, History and Geography. We plan to add more subjects in due course. If there’s a subject your child needs that isn’t covered yet, let us know and we’ll prioritise it.

Is my child’s data safe?+

Yes. We don’t sell data or show ads, and your child’s conversations are never used for advertising or to train AI models. We use a small number of trusted providers to run the service (the AI, voice-to-text, payments and email), all listed in our privacy policy. Parents can see their child’s activity and can delete the account at any time. You can read more about how we keep children safe, including our safeguarding controls and how we handle your child’s data.

How much does it cost?+

£15 a month for one child, or £25 a month for two or more children, with every learning mode included. Every family has a generous monthly pot of credits that a normal month won't come near. There's a free 14-day trial first, we email you three days before the first payment, and you can cancel whenever you like. The pricing page has the detail, including what to do if £15 is genuinely difficult.

How many children can I add?+

Two or more children are £25 a month between them, each with their own login and progress tracking, all on one parent dashboard. More than four children? Get in touch and we'll sort you out.

Is there an app for iPhone or Android?+

Not in the app stores yet, and you don't need one. Learn with Fred works in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer. Add it to the home screen once and it opens full screen with Fred's icon, just like an app.

iPhone and iPad: open app.learnwithfred.co.uk in Safari, tap Share (the square with an arrow), then Add to Home Screen.

Android: open it in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Add to Home screen (some phones say Install app).

An app-store version is on the roadmap.

Should this replace my child’s human tutor?+

No, we’re firm believers a tool will never fully replace a great human tutor. But private tutoring can be expensive and not every family can afford it. Fred is designed to be the next best thing: available any time, endlessly patient, and personalised. If you already have a tutor, Fred works brilliantly alongside them. If you don’t, Fred is here.

What if I can’t afford it?+

Every child deserves access to good tutoring, regardless of family circumstances. If cost is ever a barrier, please get in touch, we’ll find a way to make it work. This isn’t small print: it’s a founding principle of Learn with Fred.

Who is Fred?+

Learn with Fred is named after a real tabby cat who lives with the founder in the UK. He’s also the unofficial mascot of the school at the end of the road, and his favourite spot is the couch in the SEND department, where he provides a calming influence to children who need it. The Fred your child talks to in the app is an AI tutor, not a cat or a person, and he always tells them so.
